Simple additive boosts arm surgery pain relief
NCT ID NCT07399691
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether adding dexamethasone to the standard numbing drug bupivacaine improves pain blocks for upper arm surgery. In 54 adults, the combination led to faster numbness and longer pain relief compared to bupivacaine alone. The approach aims to improve patient comfort and reduce the need for additional pain medication after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
dexamethasone added to bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If confirmed, this combination could provide longer-lasting pain relief after arm surgery, reducing the need for extra painkillers.
What could go wrong
This was a small, single-center study with only 54 participants. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries, and the long-term safety of adding dexamethasone this way is not fully known.
