Talking therapy shows promise for MG patients with depression in tiny pilot study

NCT ID NCT07649187

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether having a tendency toward depression affects how well people with thymoma-associated myasthenia gravis (MG) respond to psychological counseling. Nineteen adults who had surgery for thymoma and MG received eight sessions of counseling based on Gestalt therapy and Somatic Experiencing. Researchers measured changes in daily functioning, quality of life, and well-being before and after the sessions.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward personalized counseling approaches for myasthenia gravis patients with depressive symptoms.

What could go wrong

This is a very small pilot study with only 19 participants and no control group, so results may not apply to everyone. The intervention is behavioral, not a drug, so effects are limited.
