Deep cleaning may soothe jaw pain for teeth grinders with gum disease

NCT ID NCT06429917

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether a deep dental cleaning (called subgingival instrumentation) can reduce jaw symptoms like pain, stiffness, and tension in people who grind their teeth (bruxers) and also have gum disease (periodontitis). Sixty adults aged 30-40 received the cleaning, and their jaw symptoms were checked at 2, 3, and 6 months. The goal was to see if treating gum disease could also help with jaw discomfort.

What this could mean

What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple dental cleaning procedure to ease jaw discomfort in people who grind their teeth and have gum disease.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The improvement might be modest or temporary.
