Can magnetic pulses curb cannabis cravings? small trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06114212
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This early-phase trial tested whether deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) targeting specific brain regions is safe and tolerable for people with moderate-to-severe cannabis use disorder. Twelve adults who used cannabis at least four days per week received the stimulation. The main goals were to see if the procedure was feasible and acceptable, while also measuring any changes in cannabis use and cravings.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
deep repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS) via H4 coil
What this could lead to
If this approach proves feasible and safe, it could pave the way for a larger study testing whether dTMS can help reduce cannabis use and cravings.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small pilot study with only 12 participants and no placebo group. It is designed to test feasibility, not effectiveness, so results may not lead to a proven treatment.
