Could a quicker CT scan replace MRI for oral cancer staging?

NCT ID NCT07343271

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a special type of CT scan (dual-energy CT) can be as good as MRI for staging oral and throat cancers. Staging helps doctors decide the best treatment. If the CT works just as well, patients might avoid an extra MRI, get treated faster, and free up MRI machines for others. The study will enroll 30 adults with confirmed oral or oropharyngeal cancer.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a faster CT scan can replace MRI for cancer staging, reducing delays in starting treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The CT method might not be as accurate as MRI in some cases.
