Brain surgery showdown: which saves more lives after severe head trauma?
NCT ID NCT04261673
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 02, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study compares two types of brain surgery for people with a severe head injury that causes a blood clot (epidural hematoma) and brain herniation (when brain tissue is pushed out of place). The two surgeries are decompressive craniectomy (removing part of the skull to relieve pressure) and craniotomy (opening the skull to remove the clot). The goal is to see which surgery leads to better long-term recovery and fewer complications. About 120 participants will be followed for months after surgery.
