10-Year showdown: stents or pills for blocked arteries?

NCT ID NCT06908499

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study follows 840 people with a completely blocked coronary artery (chronic total occlusion) for at least 10 years. Half received a drug-eluting stent, and half got optimal medical therapy alone. Researchers will compare rates of death, heart attack, stroke, and repeat procedures to see which approach works better in the long run.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
drug-eluting stent
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that stents provide better long-term outcomes than medication alone for patients with completely blocked coronary arteries.
What could go wrong
This is a long-term follow-up study, not a new treatment. Results may not change current practice if stents show no clear advantage over medication.
