First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests a therapy called Deaf-MET, which is a version of motivational enhancement therapy designed specifically for Deaf adults who use American Sign Language. The goal is to see if the therapy is practical, acceptable, and helps participants become more ready to change their drinking habits. The study will enroll 30 Deaf adults with high-risk alcohol use and deliver the therapy in person or via telehealth.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Deaf-MET (a culturally adapted motivational enhancement therapy)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide an effective, accessible therapy option for Deaf adults with alcohol use disorder, improving engagement and outcomes.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study (30 participants) with no control group, so results may not generalize. The therapy is behavioral and may not work for everyone.
