Could less radiation be enough for HPV throat cancer?
NCT ID NCT05600842
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a reduced dose of radiation can safely treat HPV-positive oropharyngeal (throat) cancer. About 111 patients will receive a lower total radiation dose than usual, with some also getting chemotherapy if needed. The goal is to see if this approach keeps the cancer from coming back while potentially causing fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that a lower radiation dose is enough to control HPV-positive throat cancer, leading to fewer long-term side effects for patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, single-arm observational study, so results may not apply to all patients. Lower radiation might not control the cancer as well as standard doses, and some patients still need chemotherapy.
