Brain pacemaker trial hopes to lift severe depression

Summary

This early-stage study tests if deep brain stimulation (DBS) is safe and effective for people with depression that hasn't improved with other treatments. Twenty adults aged 18-65 with major depression or bipolar disorder will have a DBS device implanted. Their symptoms will be tracked with questionnaires over 5 years, and the device will be turned on and off without their knowledge to measure its true effect.
