Smart radiotherapy aims to spare saliva glands in head and neck cancer

NCT ID NCT04883281

First seen Mar 21, 2026 · Last updated Jun 05, 2026 · Updated 9 times

Summary

This study tested a new type of radiation therapy that adjusts the treatment beam each day to match the patient's current anatomy. The goal was to see if this daily adaptive approach could reduce long-term dry mouth (xerostomia) compared to standard radiation in 50 people with head and neck cancer. By using smaller safety margins, the treatment aimed to better protect healthy tissues like saliva glands.
