Can a monthly antibiotic shot keep kids with leukemia safer from infections?
NCT ID NCT06810583
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-phase trial is testing whether a long-acting antibiotic called dalbavancin, given once every 28 days along with a short course of oral antibiotics, can prevent serious bloodstream infections in children and young adults with high-risk leukemia. The study will enroll 29 participants receiving chemotherapy that causes prolonged low white blood cell counts. Researchers will measure how many develop infections, how well the drug is tolerated, and how acceptable the treatment schedule is to patients.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dalbavancin (an antibiotic given by IV every 28 days, plus a fluoroquinolone antibiotic by mouth for the first 28 days)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new way to prevent dangerous bloodstream infections in children with leukemia during chemotherapy.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase trial with only 29 participants and no comparison group, so results may not apply broadly. The antibiotic combination may also cause side effects or not prevent infections as hoped.
