Could a few shots replace weeks of IV antibiotics for joint infections?
NCT ID NCT05046860
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests dalbavancin, a long-acting antibiotic given as a few shots over two months, for infections that occur after hip or knee replacement surgery. The standard treatment requires 12 weeks of daily antibiotics, which can be hard to tolerate and complete. The trial includes adults with a first infection of the joint replacement caused by staphylococcus bacteria, treated surgically. Researchers want to see if this simpler approach is effective and well-tolerated.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Dalbavancin
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a simpler, shorter antibiotic regimen for joint replacement infections, reducing the need for daily IVs and improving patient compliance.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 43 participants. The long-term effectiveness and safety compared to standard 12-week antibiotics are not yet proven.
