Could a common muscle relaxant cut narcotic use after hysterectomy?

NCT ID NCT07664956

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding cyclobenzaprine, a muscle relaxant, to standard pain medicines (ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and short-term narcotics) improves pain control and reduces narcotic use after minimally invasive hysterectomy. About 36 women undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy will be randomly assigned to receive either cyclobenzaprine or a placebo for one week after surgery. Pain scores and medication use will be tracked.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Cyclobenzaprine (a muscle relaxant)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a better pain management option after hysterectomy, reducing the need for narcotics.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 36 participants, so results may not apply widely. The benefit may be small or not statistically significant.
