Could bedside ECG and ultrasound replace chest X-Rays for central line checks?
NCT ID NCT07291869
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether two bedside techniques—intracavity ECG and lung ultrasound—can safely confirm the position of a central venous catheter and rule out lung complications in intensive care patients. 75 adults needing a central line will be randomly assigned to standard care or the new methods. All will still get a chest X-ray for comparison. The goal is to see if these techniques are practical and reliable enough to use routinely.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to faster, safer confirmation of central line placement without routine chest X-rays in critical care.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small feasibility study (75 people) testing whether the methods work in practice, not whether they improve outcomes. The techniques may not be reliable enough to replace standard care.
