Blood marker may flag deadly Post-Surgery leaks before symptoms appear
NCT ID NCT07763379
First seen Aug 13, 2026 · Last updated Aug 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial asks whether measuring C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood after gastrointestinal surgery can help doctors spot anastomotic leaks early. Anastomotic leaks are a serious complication where a surgical connection fails to heal, leading to infection and potentially life-threatening illness. The study will follow 50 adult patients who undergo primary repair or anastomosis of the esophagus, stomach, small bowel, or colon, tracking their CRP levels after surgery. The goal is to see if rising CRP can serve as an early warning sign, allowing faster diagnosis and treatment before symptoms become severe.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- C-reactive protein (CRP) blood test
- What this could lead to
- If CRP levels prove reliable, doctors could use a simple, low-cost blood test to catch dangerous leaks early, potentially saving lives and reducing complications.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early study. CRP is a general inflammation marker, so it may not clearly distinguish leaks from normal post-surgery inflammation, and results may not apply to all patients.
