New drug cocktail shows promise for Tough-to-Treat leukemia in seniors
NCT ID NCT04230239
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested a chemotherapy drug called CPX-351 in 59 adults aged 60 to 75 with a high-risk form of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The goal was to see how well it could put the cancer into remission. Participants received the drug through an IV, and some also had a stem cell transplant or maintenance therapy. The trial is now complete, and researchers are looking at remission rates and side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CPX-351 (a combination of two chemotherapy drugs, daunorubicin and cytarabine, in a liposomal formulation)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a more effective chemotherapy option for older adults with high-risk AML, potentially leading to better remission rates and disease control.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-arm phase 2 trial with only 59 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Chemotherapy carries significant side effects, and the study does not compare CPX-351 to other treatments.
