Could a CPAP machine make lung cancer radiation more accurate?

NCT ID NCT03422302

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a CPAP device can reduce tumor movement in lung cancer patients during stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). About 30 participants will use CPAP or deep inspiration breath hold to see which better stabilizes tumors. The goal is to improve treatment precision and potentially reduce damage to healthy tissue.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device

What this could lead to

If it works, this could make radiation therapy for lung cancer more precise by reducing tumor movement during treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small early-phase pilot study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The CPAP device may not reduce tumor motion better than standard breath-holding techniques.
