Summary
This study tested whether offering smokers an e-cigarette starter kit, brief advice, and a referral to stop-smoking services in the emergency department helps them quit. Nearly 1,000 adult daily smokers took part. The main goal was to see if more people stayed smoke-free for six months compared to usual care.

What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
e-cigarette starter kit with brief smoking cessation advice and referral to stop smoking services
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a practical way to help smokers quit when they visit the emergency department, reducing smoking-related diseases.
What could go wrong
The trial is completed but results are not yet widely known. E-cigarettes have their own health risks, and long-term quit rates may be modest. The intervention may not work for all smokers.
