Discarded eye tissue yields clues for better vision correction

NCT ID NCT04817592

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study will analyze corneal tissue that is normally thrown away during a common myopia surgery called CLEAR (or SMILE). Researchers will test the tissue's strength and structure to learn more about how the cornea behaves. The goal is to improve future eye surgeries by understanding the biomechanics of the cornea. The study involves 100 patients aged 20-50 scheduled for CLEAR surgery.

What this could lead to

If successful, this research could improve our understanding of corneal strength and shape, potentially leading to safer and more precise vision correction procedures.

What could go wrong

This is an early observational study on discarded tissue, not a treatment trial. The findings may not directly change clinical practice or benefit participants.
