Core exercises after abdominal surgery may cut hernia risk, study says
NCT ID NCT03808584
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether doing specific core muscle exercises right after abdominal surgery can lower the chance of developing an incisional hernia and reduce long-term pain. About 588 adults having abdominal surgery will be randomly assigned to either standard care or a daily exercise routine starting the day after surgery. The goal is to see if staying active, rather than resting, leads to better recovery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
core muscle exercises
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple, drug-free way to reduce hernias and chronic pain after abdominal surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively early-stage trial with no phase designation, and the primary hypothesis is that the exercises may not change hernia rates. Results may not apply to all surgery types.
