New cord clamping method aims to protect fragile newborn lungs

Summary

This study is testing whether waiting to clamp the umbilical cord until after a baby's lungs start working can help prevent dangerous high blood pressure in the lungs of newborns with a rare birth defect called congenital diaphragmatic hernia. Researchers are comparing this delayed 'physiological' clamping method to the standard immediate clamping in 140 babies. The goal is to see if the new approach reduces lung complications in the first day of life.
