Own hamstring vs. donor tissue: which knee graft wins?
NCT ID NCT07204587
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study compares two surgical options for young adults (18-45) with persistent knee pain after meniscus removal: using a piece of their own hamstring tendon or a donor meniscus. Forty participants will be assigned to one of four groups, including randomized and preference-based choices. The main goal is to see which graft leads to better knee function and pain relief two years after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Autologous semitendinosus tendon graft (a piece of the patient's own hamstring tendon) and meniscal allograft (donor meniscus tissue)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that using a patient's own hamstring tendon is a safe and effective alternative to donor tissue for meniscus reconstruction, potentially reducing costs and wait times.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Both procedures are surgeries with standard risks like infection or graft failure.
