Neck surgery showdown: which disc implant works best?

NCT ID NCT05701059

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study compares two FDA-approved artificial disc implants used in neck surgery for conditions like herniated discs or arthritis. Twenty adults aged 18 to 60 will be randomly assigned to receive either the Biomet Zimmer Mobi-C or Nuvasive Simplify implant. Researchers will measure neck movement, pain, and quality of life before surgery and at 3, 6, and 12 months after to see which implant performs better.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

artificial disc implants (Biomet Zimmer Mobi-C and Nuvasive Simplify)

What this could lead to

If this trial succeeds, it could help surgeons choose the best disc implant for neck surgery, leading to better pain relief and neck movement for patients.

What could go wrong

This is a small early study with only 20 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Both implants are already FDA-approved, so no major new treatment is being tested.
