Could less chemo mean better quality of life for bladder cancer patients?

NCT ID NCT06892860

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares 3 versus 6 cycles of platinum-based chemotherapy followed by the immunotherapy drug avelumab in 320 people with advanced bladder cancer. The goal is to see if fewer chemo cycles improve quality of life without harming cancer control. Participants receive either 3 or 6 cycles of chemo, then avelumab every 2 weeks for up to 2 years.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

avelumab (a cancer immunotherapy drug) plus platinum-based chemotherapy (gemcitabine plus cisplatin or carboplatin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that shorter chemotherapy (3 cycles) before immunotherapy is just as effective and improves quality of life for people with advanced bladder cancer.

What could go wrong

This is a phase 2 trial, so results are preliminary. The shorter chemo might not control the cancer as well, and side effects from avelumab (like immune reactions) are possible.
