Avastin vs eylea: which eye drug needs fewer shots?

NCT ID NCT04101877

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two drugs, Avastin and Eylea, given as eye injections for wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The main goal is to see which drug requires fewer injections over two years while still controlling the disease. Researchers will also check vision, eye thickness, and quality of life. About 402 people aged 50 and older with wet AMD are taking part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bevacizumab (Avastin) and aflibercept (Eylea)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show which drug is more cost-effective and requires fewer injections for wet AMD, improving patient convenience and reducing treatment burden.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 2 trial, so results are still early. The drugs may work similarly, or one might not be as effective as hoped. Risks include eye infection or inflammation from injections.
