Ancient drug may shield Veterans' hearts during surgery

Summary
This study is testing if a safe, old anti-inflammatory drug called colchicine can prevent serious heart complications after major surgery. It will involve 700 veterans with a history of heart disease who are having surgery. Participants will take either colchicine or a placebo pill before and after their operation to see if the drug reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, or death.
