Cochlear implants for Single-Sided deafness: a Cost-Effective solution?

NCT ID NCT02204618

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether a cochlear implant is a good value for people who are deaf in one ear or have severe hearing loss in one ear. Participants first tried other hearing devices, and if those didn't work, they were randomly assigned to get a cochlear implant right away or wait six months. The study measured quality of life and hearing ability to see which approach was better.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that cochlear implants are a worthwhile option for people with hearing loss in one ear, improving quality of life and hearing.

What could go wrong

This is a completed study, but results may not apply to everyone. The implant requires surgery and may not work for all types of hearing loss.
