Could a cochlear implant help babies hear in one ear?

NCT ID NCT05775367

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is testing whether a cochlear implant is safe and effective for infants and toddlers who are deaf in one ear. Sixty children will receive the implant and be followed until age 5. Researchers will compare their hearing abilities to children with normal hearing and to those with single-sided deafness who did not get an implant.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Cochlear implant (MED-EL SYNCHRONY 2)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide a safe and effective way to restore hearing in one ear for very young children with single-sided deafness, improving their ability to hear in noisy places and locate sounds.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage study with only 60 children, so results may not apply to everyone. Surgery and device use carry risks like infection or device failure, and long-term benefits are not yet proven.
