New drug may shield babies from devastating birth virus

NCT ID NCT05446571

First seen Apr 25, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 4 times

Summary

This study tests if a medicine called letermovir can better stop the CMV virus in unborn babies than the current standard valaciclovir. Pregnant women who had a first-trimester CMV infection and whose fetus is infected (but without severe brain issues) will receive one of the two drugs. The goal is to see which treatment leads to more babies being born without the virus in their blood.
