New laser microscope could boost lung cancer detection during bronchoscopy

NCT ID NCT06079970

First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares standard bronchoscopy (using a thin tube to look at the lungs) with and without an additional laser-based microscope called nCLE. The microscope helps doctors see if the sampling needle is in the right spot before taking tissue. About 208 adults with suspicious lung nodules will take part. The goal is to see if nCLE leads to more accurate diagnoses.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ€” not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
needle-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (nCLE) device
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make lung nodule diagnosis more accurate, reducing the need for repeat procedures or more invasive biopsies.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small, early-stage trial (208 participants) comparing a new imaging technique to standard care. The improvement in diagnosis may be modest, and the device adds complexity and cost.
