A new protocol after heart attacks could slash risk of repeat events
NCT ID NCT07773272
First seen Aug 19, 2026 ยท Last updated Aug 19, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether starting a comprehensive, guideline-based treatment plan immediately after a heart attack can reduce the chance of another heart attack, stroke, or death. The plan targets key risk factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes using a combination of medications. About 1,200 adults who had a heart attack and underwent a stent procedure will be enrolled. Half will receive this rapid protocol, while the other half gets standard care, and outcomes are compared over two years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Rapid ESC-guideline-based secondary prevention protocol including lipid-lowering, antihypertensive, SGLT-2 inhibitors, and GLP-1 agonists
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could become a standard protocol to prevent recurrent heart attacks and strokes, improving survival and quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is testing a protocol, not a single drug, so results may vary. It's uncertain whether the rapid approach will outperform standard care in reducing events.
