Could a new anesthetic keep your mind sharper after a procedure?

NCT ID NCT07673978

First seen Jun 29, 2026 · Last updated Jun 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two sedatives—ciprofol and propofol—used during painless gastroscopy and colonoscopy. The goal is to see which drug leads to less cognitive decline after the procedure. Researchers will also monitor side effects like changes in blood pressure and heart rate. The trial includes adults aged 18–65 with normal cognitive function before the procedure.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ciprofol

What this could lead to

If ciprofol causes less cognitive decline than propofol, it could become a preferred anesthetic for procedures like endoscopy, especially in older adults.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center Phase 4 study with 298 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Cognitive changes after anesthesia are often temporary and hard to measure.
