Shrimp shells vs. superbugs: can nanoparticles beat recurrent UTIs?

NCT ID NCT07482553

First seen Mar 21, 2026 · Last updated Apr 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This lab study uses bacteria from 60 people with urinary tract infections to see if chitosan nanoparticles (made from shrimp shells) can destroy the sticky biofilms that make infections hard to treat. Researchers will test the nanoparticles alone and with the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, and also see if coating catheters with them prevents biofilm buildup. The goal is to find new ways to fight drug-resistant UTIs, but this is early-stage research, not a treatment for participants.
