Chew your way to better swallowing after a stroke?
NCT ID NCT06637033
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether chewing real food (like candies and dumplings) before meals can improve swallowing and quality of life in stroke patients who have trouble swallowing. 120 patients were split into two groups: both got standard rehab and tube feeding, but one group also chewed food pieces for 10 minutes before each feeding. The researchers measured swallowing function and quality of life to see if the chewing exercise made a difference.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
chewing real food (behavioral intervention)
What this could lead to
If it works, this simple chewing exercise could become a low-cost way to help stroke patients with swallowing problems eat better and feel better.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with no phase designation. The intervention is very specific (chewing then spitting out food) and may not be practical or effective for all patients.
