Nerve sensitivity may predict physical therapy success for shoulder tears
NCT ID NCT07664137
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether 'central sensitization' — a condition where the nervous system is overly sensitive to pain — affects how well physical therapy works for people with partial rotator cuff tears. Researchers will follow 60 adults aged 18-65 who have had shoulder pain for at least 6 weeks. All participants will receive standard physical therapy for 6 weeks, and the study will measure changes in pain and shoulder function to see if those with central sensitization respond differently.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could help doctors predict which patients will benefit most from physical therapy, leading to more personalized shoulder pain treatment.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not find a clear link, and results may not apply to all patients.
