One extra therapy session may keep cancer patients off cigarettes
NCT ID NCT07815912
First seen Sep 11, 2026 · Last updated Sep 11, 2026
Summary
Researchers at Vietnam National Cancer Hospital are testing whether adding one structured cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) session to standard brief counseling helps cancer patients remain smoke-free. The trial enrolls 498 adults who smoked at cancer diagnosis and have stayed completely abstinent since. All participants receive brief relapse-prevention counseling, then half are randomly assigned to also get a single CBT-based session. The study follows participants for three months to see who avoids smoking even a puff.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a single structured cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) session for smoking relapse prevention
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could offer a low-cost, easy-to-deliver way to help cancer patients stay smoke-free after quitting at diagnosis, potentially improving treatment outcomes and quality of life.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, short-term study in one hospital in Vietnam, so results may not apply to other settings or patient groups. The extra CBT session may not add enough benefit beyond standard brief counseling, and self-reported abstinence can be less reliable than biological testing.
