Can talk therapy tame ADHD and cut crime behind bars?

NCT ID NCT06080373

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a special type of talk therapy (cognitive-behavioral therapy, or CBT) designed for adults with ADHD who are in prison. Researchers will compare it to a standard prison program and a waitlist. They want to see if the therapy reduces ADHD symptoms, depression, anxiety, and the chance of reoffending after release. About 111 inmates in Spain and Germany will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide an effective non-drug treatment for ADHD in prisoners, potentially reducing both symptoms and reoffending rates.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with only 111 participants, and prison settings make follow-up difficult. The therapy may not work better than existing programs.
