New Three-Drug cocktail aims to tackle tough leukemia

NCT ID NCT05657639

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests a combination of three drugs—venetoclax, cladribine, and low-dose cytarabine—in 68 adults aged 16-70 with acute myeloid leukemia that has returned or not responded to prior treatment. The goal is to see if this cocktail can shrink or eliminate leukemia cells better than standard therapy. Participants are randomly assigned to receive either the new combo or a standard regimen.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Venetoclax, cladribine, and low-dose cytarabine (CAV regimen)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a new treatment option for people with hard-to-treat acute myeloid leukemia that has come back or not responded to standard therapy.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase 2 trial with only 68 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The combination may cause side effects like low blood counts or infections, and it may not work better than existing treatments.
