Pre-transplant workout may shield heart in older leukemia patients

NCT ID NCT07616921

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a home-based exercise program called CAREFit-BMT for people with high-risk acute myeloid leukemia who are about to have a stem cell transplant. The program includes aerobic and strength training to improve heart function before the procedure. Researchers will enroll 30 adults to see if the program is feasible and acceptable, not yet whether it works.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Aerobic exercise and strength training

What this could lead to

If it works, this could show that pre-transplant exercise helps protect heart health and makes stem cell transplant safer for older or frail patients.

What could go wrong

This is a very small early feasibility study with only 30 people, not designed to prove the exercise actually improves outcomes. Results may not apply to all patients.
