Could a new drug beat the standard for preventing postpartum hemorrhage?

NCT ID NCT06333340

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether carbetocin works better than oxytocin to prevent severe bleeding after a planned C-section in women with risk factors like twins, a large baby, or obesity. About 160 participants will receive one of the two drugs, and doctors will measure how many need extra medication to control bleeding. The goal is to find a more effective option for those at higher risk.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Carbetocin and oxytocin

What this could lead to

If carbetocin works better, it could reduce dangerous bleeding after C-sections in high-risk women.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (160 participants) and may not prove carbetocin is superior. Both drugs have known side effects like nausea or low blood pressure.
