Engineered immune cells take aim at multiple myeloma from multiple angles
NCT ID NCT03271632
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a new type of immunotherapy called CAR T cells that are designed to recognize several different targets on multiple myeloma cancer cells. The treatment involves taking a patient's own immune cells, modifying them in a lab to better attack the cancer, and infusing them back. The trial includes 20 adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma who have limited options left. Researchers are checking whether the treatment is safe and how long the modified cells persist in the body.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
CAR T cells targeting multiple cancer antigens
What this could lead to
If successful, this approach could offer a new treatment option for patients with multiple myeloma who have run out of standard therapies.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with a small number of participants, so results may not apply broadly. CAR T cell therapy can cause serious side effects like cytokine release syndrome.
