New combo therapy aims to beat back tough lymphoma

NCT ID NCT04484012

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This phase 2 trial tests a combination of two treatments for mantle cell lymphoma that has returned or is not responding to standard care. Patients receive their own immune cells that have been genetically modified to recognize and attack cancer cells (CAR-T cells), along with a daily pill called acalabrutinib that blocks cancer growth signals. The study will enroll 36 participants to see if the combination is safe and how many patients achieve a complete response within 6 months.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

CAR-T cells (engineered immune cells) and acalabrutinib (a targeted cancer pill)

What this could lead to

If successful, this combination could offer a new treatment option for patients with mantle cell lymphoma that has come back or stopped responding to other therapies.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (36 people) focused on safety and initial effectiveness. The treatment may cause serious side effects, and it is not yet known if it works better than existing options.
