Sniffing out seizures: scientists hunt for odor clues to predict epilepsy attacks
NCT ID NCT05865561
First seen Jan 04, 2026 · Last updated May 22, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study is looking for specific smells (volatile organic compounds) that people with epilepsy might give off before, during, or after a seizure. Researchers will collect odor samples from 100 adults with drug-resistant epilepsy during a hospital stay. The goal is to identify these unique scents, which could one day lead to a non-invasive device that warns of an upcoming seizure.
