Can the right work-rest rhythm and a massage gun soften stiff calf muscles?
NCT ID NCT07745452
First seen Aug 04, 2026 · Last updated Aug 05, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at how different work-rest schedules during calf-raise exercises change calf muscle stiffness in volleyball athletes. Thirty players (15 women and 15 men) will do three exercise sessions with different work-rest patterns, and their calf muscle stiffness will be measured before and after exercise using a special ultrasound technique. The study also checks whether a five-minute percussive therapy session helps reduce stiffness during recovery. The goal is to see which schedule and recovery approach might best help muscles relax after exercise.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Percussive therapy (a massage-like device applied to the calf muscle)
- What this could lead to
- If certain work-rest schedules or percussive therapy reduce muscle stiffness more effectively, this could help athletes recover faster and improve training routines.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study in a specific group of athletes, so results may not apply to everyone. The effect on stiffness is measured right after exercise, not over the long term.
