New score could save lives by predicting bleeding deaths in cirrhosis patients
NCT ID NCT04662918
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study is testing a new scoring system called CAGIB to predict the risk of death in the hospital for people with liver cirrhosis who have sudden gastrointestinal bleeding. Researchers will compare CAGIB with two older scoring systems (Child-Pugh and MELD) in 3,000 patients across multiple countries. The goal is to see which score best helps doctors quickly identify the sickest patients so they can act faster.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could give doctors a more accurate tool to predict which patients are at highest risk of dying in the hospital, helping them make faster treatment decisions.
- What could go wrong
- This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. The new score may not prove better than existing ones, and results may not apply to all patient groups.
