Can a Pre-Surgery injection cut Post-Op pain and opioid use?
NCT ID NCT07747584
First seen Aug 05, 2026 · Last updated Aug 06, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether injecting a local anesthetic called bupivacaine into the skin before laparoscopic abdominal surgery can reduce pain after the operation. About 166 adults having elective laparoscopic surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either the injection or standard pain care. The study will measure pain levels, time to first painkiller, and total opioid use in the first 24 hours after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- bupivacaine injected into the skin at the surgical incision sites before the operation
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this simple, low-cost technique could become a standard part of pain management for laparoscopic surgery, reducing the need for opioids.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is relatively small and early, and the benefit may be modest. There is also a small risk of allergic reaction or other side effects from the local anesthetic.
