New balloon could save dialysis patients from repeat surgeries
NCT ID NCT06639451
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a special balloon coated with the drug paclitaxel to treat blockages in arm fistulas used for dialysis. The balloon is inflated to open the narrowed blood vessel and release the drug to help keep it open. Researchers will check if the fistula stays open without needing another procedure for at least 6 months in 186 adults on dialysis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- paclitaxel-coated balloon catheter
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a better way to keep dialysis fistulas open longer, reducing the need for repeat procedures.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-stage study without a control group, so results may not prove superiority over standard care. The drug coating may carry risks like vessel damage or allergic reactions.
