New trial hopes to stop lung transplant failure before it starts
NCT ID NCT07410312
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This early-phase trial tests whether adding the anti-inflammatory drug Anakinra to the solution that donor lungs are stored in can prevent primary graft dysfunction — a serious complication after lung transplant that causes low oxygen and lung inflammation. The study will enroll 20 lung transplant recipients and measure outcomes like graft function on day 3, ICU stay, and hospital stay. It is not yet recruiting.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Anakinra (a drug that blocks inflammation)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could reduce the risk of severe lung injury right after transplant, potentially improving recovery and shortening hospital stays.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small trial (20 people) testing a new use for an existing drug. It may not show clear benefit, and results may not apply to all transplant patients.
