Breathe easy: simple exercises may boost lung health after hip fracture
NCT ID NCT07389291
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looked at whether two easy breathing exercises—Liuzijue (a gentle Chinese practice using sounds) and box breathing (a controlled pattern)—can improve lung capacity and blood pressure in older adults who were immobile after a hip fracture. Researchers analyzed data from 40 people aged 65-85 who did one of the exercises for 20 minutes twice a day for 4 weeks. The goal is to find safe, cost-free ways to help recovery.

What this could lead to
If these breathing exercises prove effective, they could offer a simple, low-cost way to improve lung function and blood pressure in older adults recovering from hip fractures.
What could go wrong
This is a small, retrospective study with only 40 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The exercises are gentle, but individual responses can vary.
